BSNL 3G trick to get Unlimited 3G data

// October 18th, 2011 // 9 Comments » // Tips & Tricks // Written by

I have been one of the early adopters of 3G revolution which, in India, came through BSNL 3G. BSNL 3G was the only  3G internet connection available at that time. I had opted for Rs.4200 , 6 month unlimited 3g plan of BSNL. All was good till August 2011, when my 6 month validity came to an end. Things had changed a lot in these 6 months… Other private players had entered into market, but all of them had a higher tariff and no unlimited plan. Seeing this BSNL had also taken off the Rs.4200 unlimited plan.

Considering my travel, business presentations, work from office as well as home I needed a wireless/portable internet connection. My usage goes to minimum of 4-5Gb per day, so limited plans are out of the question. Tried my luck with Docomo 3g, MTS Blaze, Vodafone 3G (connecting to airtel 3g network) but nothing was satisfactory. No one really had a truly unlimited 3g without any fair usage policy. Also they would take years to match up the 3g coverage what BSNL has currently (I did face difficulties with coverage within the city limits itself).

BSNL Ipad 3g

Finally, deciding to go back to BSNL 3g after 2 months of struggling, I visited BSNL website to check their tariff plans. I almost finalized to go with their Rs.3000 3g data plan with 10gb data per month. But all of a sudden the iPad Data plan option on their home page caught my attention. Once I went into that page was amazed to see a unlimited data plans for Apple iPad. My engineering brain started thinking if the sim can connect to 3g network on iPad, why can’t  it connect to 3g network on regular data card. I googled around for information to use the BSNL micro sim with regular data card, and discovered that many other users were able to use it with regular 3G usb dongles. Considering the factor that the iPad micro sim is going to cost only Rs.100, I decided to give it a try.

I went to the BSNL customer service center and asked for iPad sim. They asked me to fill up the sim card registration form and provide xerox copies of the documents. Although the actual price of sim was Rs.100, I was demanded to make an additional recharge of Rs.599 or Rs.999 , which I could not avoid. This is not mandatory actually, but it is a way for BSNL to make money by forcing the customers to recharge. If I had a iPad with me I would have argued with them, but considering the fact that I needed the Sim  to use on regular data card, I just listened to them. They did ask about my iPad, but I just managed by saying I have not brought it to the service center.

BSNL micro SIM

Tip:
Other users who are trying to get 3g micro sim, you need to be smart enough to manage the Customer Service Center staff without an iPad. I would not recommend to tell you don’t have an iPad, you can just tell that you have ordered it and its in transition, iPad is with your brother sister at some other location etc. Just make up a genuine sounding reason.

UMG 1831 Micro SIM

After getting the micro sim, I was eager to test it out on my Huwei UMG1831 USB Dongle. To my great relief, the sim was detected automatically. I configured the mobile partner software with the BSNL 3G settings with plan bsnlnet and clicked connect. It connected without any problem. I checked the speed with speedtest.net and found that the speed was quite similar to the speeds I used to get on regular BSNL 3G.

BSNL 3g Speed

Tip for using micro sim:
Micro sim is just like any regular sim in functionality, but the only difference is the size. It will work on any USB dongle or mobile(I tried it on my xperia mini pro). You should just take some extra care when inserting it into the device which is has a sim card slot which is bigger than the size of the micro sim. The core part of the sim (the golden color part) has to be in proper contact  the sim card reader of the device.

Micro SIM compared with Regular SIM

Additional Tip: The micro sim card by default will be attached to a plastic card which usually comes with all sim cards. You can let the micro sim card be attached to it, and cut the plastic material to a shape of a regular sim card, so that you can fit it as if it is a regular sim.

Hackers are great Programmers . Hackers solve problems and build things, and they believe in freedom and voluntary mutual help. To be accepted as a hacker, you have to behave as though you have this kind of attitude yourself. And to behave as though you have the attitude, you have to really believe the attitude.

Installing Webmin on CentOS

// October 26th, 2010 // No Comments » // Linux, Tech // Written by

I recently got a MediaTemple VE Server, one of the best unmanaged VPS servers available today. Its built to be a highly efficient and performant utility VPS, with high-end hardware, top-tier connectivity and superior virtualization technology.

The only one head-ache with this server is that you have to manage everthing from top to bottom. Linux Server Management is obviously not a easy task for newbies. However there are various ready tools to reduce this headache, however you will have to setup them on your own initially.

My choice of control panel was Webmin. Webmin is one of the best open source control panel. Here goes the official description:

Webmin is a web-based interface for system administration for Unix. Using any modern web browser, you can setup user accounts, Apache, DNS, file sharing and much more. Webmin removes the need to manually edit Unix configuration files like /etc/passwd, and lets you manage a system from the console or remotely.

So now lets install webmin step by step:

Step 0 : Install dependencies

For CentOS 5.1 (or lower) we need to install few dependecies. Just connect to your server through SSH and use the following command:

yum -y install perl-Net-SSLeay

Note: This step is not required in case you are using CentOS 5.2 or above, since they are already present.

Step 2 : Install Webmin

a. Change the directory using the following command

$ cd /usr/src

b. Download webmin package from http://www.webmin.com/download.html

$ wget http://prdownloads.sourceforge.net/webadmin/webmin-1.520-1.noarch.rpm

Note: You can replace the download link with the latest version of the package.

c. Install RPM

$ rpm -i webmin-1.520-1.noarch.rpm

Step 2: Open Webmin

To open webmin just open the browser and type https://your-ip-address:10000 like the example below:

https://420.420.420.420:10000
Once you open the link in the url you see a login window like below:
Webmin Login Window

You can login with your root username and password.

Step 3: Start using webmin !

Outputs of my Installation process is as below:
[root@ve ~]# cd /usr/src
[root@ve src]# wget http://prdownloads.sourceforge.net/webadmin/webmin-1.520-1.noarch.rpm

RESOLVE: REMOTE HOST IDENTIFICATION HAS CHANGED!

// October 23rd, 2010 // 3 Comments » // Linux, Tech // Written by

Recently I re-installed my MediaTemple Ve Server. I successfully installed CentOS 5 on MediaTemple Ve server. After installation I tried to connect to server through SSH. Unfortunately got a message saying WARNING: REMOTE HOST IDENTIFICATION HAS CHANGED!  It looked something like below:

$ ssh [email protected]

@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@    WARNING: REMOTE HOST IDENTIFICATION HAS CHANGED!     @
@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@
IT IS POSSIBLE THAT SOMEONE IS DOING SOMETHING NASTY!
Someone could be eavesdropping on you right now (man-in-the-middle attack)!
It is also possible that the RSA host key has just been changed.
The fingerprint for the RSA key sent by the remote host is
1e:e3:c4:0a:6a:78:e6:17:cc:f2:ba:ca:c7:39:4b:aa.
Please contact your system administrator.
Add correct host key in /Users/sandeephegde/.ssh/known_hosts to get rid of this message.
Offending key in /Users/sandeephegde/.ssh/known_hosts:1
RSA host key for 420.420.420.420 has changed and you have requested strict checking.
Host key verification failed.

Looked around to resolve the issue. Got to know that the issue was due to the old RSA key stored in the system. The solution to resolve the issue was to add the correct key. Easiest way is to remove all the old RSA keys from your computer. To do this simply go to your terminal and type as below:

$ open .ssh

This will result in opeing a windows as in screenshot:

RSA Host Keys

All that you have to do is delete the file “know_hosts” i.e simply move it to trash. Thats all you have got rid of REMOTE HOST IDENTIFICATION HAS CHANGED!

Now you can connect to you server through SSH normally. If you are still facing any difiulities leave a comment below.

Nokia Morph – The Nano Mobile !

// May 5th, 2010 // 2 Comments » // Gadgets, Tech // Written by

I was just looking around the web today, and stumbled upon a amazing concept from Nokia. It is all about the future of mobile technologies, the future of nano technologies… Nano Mobile… Spend some time and read more… Its just amazing !!!

Morph_Wrist_Mode

Launched alongside The Museum of Modern Art “Design and The Elastic Mind” exhibition, the Morph concept device is a bridge between highly advanced technologies and their potential benefits to end-users. This device concept showcases some revolutionary leaps being explored by Nokia Research Center (NRC) in collaboration with the Cambridge Nanoscience Centre (United Kingdom) – nanoscale technologies that will potentially create a world of radically different devices that open up an entirely new spectrum of possibilities.

morph_mobile

Morph concept technologies might create fantastic opportunities for mobile devices:

  • Newly-enabled flexible and transparent materials blend more seamlessly with the way we live
  • Devices become self-cleaning and self-preserving
  • Transparent electronics offering an entirely new aesthetic dimension
  • Built-in solar absorption might charge a device, whilst batteries become smaller, longer lasting and faster to charge
  • Integrated sensors might allow us to learn more about the environment around us, empowering us to make better choices

Getting Started with Your-Freedom Software

// February 18th, 2010 // 7 Comments » // Software, Tutorials & How to's // Written by

I have explained briefly about Your Freedom in my last post “Your-Freedom – Bypass Restrictive Firewalls and Filters”. In this post we shall see how to configure Your Freedom and use Your Freedom software, with live screenshots and details. If you have any queries please comment at the end.

1 Registration process

Your first step in using the service is to register on web site. You need to visit http://www.your-freedom.net/ and create an account there. There is a link underneath the login and password form fields in the red part of the banner.

your_freedom

On the registration page, choose a username (preferably one that is not likely already used) and provide a password.

Once you’ve filled everything in, click on the “Create account” button. You will be asked to confirm your details by clicking on “Create account now”.

Within a few minutes you should receive an email containing an activation link. Activate your account by clicking on the link in the email (or cut&paste it into your browser).

What if you cannot access the web page because it’s blocked? Well, it’s a hen and egg problem then. Either ask someone else to create an account for you (or do it from somewhere else) and modify it later, or obtain the client software from another source than our server, and use the username “unregistered” and the password “unregistered” in it. This account will only provide access to Your Freedom web page, however. Alternatively, if you are able to send an email to the customer support, ask them to create an account for you. Just write to [email protected] telling them about your problem, suggest a username (please limit yourself to ASCII letters and numbers, dashes and underscores) and a password, and ask them to email you the client software (please state which type you’d like, read getting and installing client software ). If all the odds are against you and you can’t get the client software from anywhere else they’ll mail you a CD as well.

2 Getting and installing the client software

Once you’ve created an account you may use it to log in on the web page. This will give you access to the Download section of the page. Log in, then click on “Downloads”.  There are several ways to run the Your Freedom client, and consequently there is more than one download option:

Windows Installer Windows users who already have a suitable Java Runtime Environment3 installed on their system and who have enough rights to install software should be able to use this version. The download is about 1 megabyte in size. If you are unable to download files ending in .exe, try to copy the link location and paste it in the URL field of a new browser window, then change the .exe to .txt.

Windows Full Installer This version comes bundled with a JRE of its own so there are no prerequisites. Every Windows user should be able to use this one, provided that you may install software on your PC. The download is rather fat, about 28 megabytes. Again, this is an .exe file, try changing the ending to .txt if this is a problem. A benefit of this version is that it’s compiled to native code and will probably consume less resources.

Both Windows installer versions are installed by running the .exe file. Just follow the instructions in the installer and you should be done in a minute.

If you are not running Windows or if you cannot install software on your PC, your best choice is the Java archive version. Download the ZIP file and extract the contents into a folder to which you may write. This could also be a memory stick, or a CDROM, by the way. Then run the Java interpreter with the “freedom.jar” file. With Windows it’s usually enough if you double-click on the JAR file, but you may want to open a “cmd” window instead, “cd” to the directory and run “javaw –jar freedom.jar” instead. On Unix boxes you’d normally use “java –jar freedom.jar” or “kaffe –jar freedom.jar” or something similar; Unix users normally know.

Your Freedom also offers a Mac OSX installer version but  it might be less current than the others. You should be able to use the Java archive version on your Mac without problems – OSX is built on Unix and ships with a pre-installed JRE.

Alternatively  all files are also available from http://mediafire.com/yourfreedom.

Here is the screenshots of installation of Your freedom on Windows 7 operating System :

Generally, the Java archive version of the Your Freedom client should run on every computer that has a suitable JRE – and enough memory. We love to hear from you if you’ve managed to run it on an exotic piece of hardware (or in an unusual place)!

3 Connecting for the first time

When you start the Your Freedom client application for the first time, you’ll be presented with a “wizard”. It’s safe not to use it and enter all required information manually, but if you are unsure, give it a try first. Manual configuration may be required in difficult connection scenarios.

Now let’s assume that you are using the wizard. It will first present a Welcome page:

Your Freedom

Do as you are told and click on the “Next” button. You’ll see this page:

Your Freedom

If your Internet connection is through a web proxy, enter the details here. If you are unsure, try to click “Next” first. If all you get is an empty list of available servers like this:

Your Freedom

(ignore the “auto-choose best” part) you need to figure out about your web proxy (or configure everything manually, e.g. if you want to use an FTP proxy!). If you get this:

Your Freedom

then you’ve filled in the proxy details properly but you need to authenticate on the proxy. Click on “Next”…

Your Freedom

… and fill in suitable login credentials. In many cases this will be your Windows Domain login (don’t forget to fill in the domain as well!). Just try until it works, you can click “Next” to try.

If you see this page:

Your Freedom

it means that you have not provided a working proxy configuration. Click on “Back” and modify the hostname/IP address and/or the port setting. Many proxies “listen” on port 80, 8080 or 3128, to name the most popular ports. Check your web browser’s configuration, it should be able to tell you.

Oh by the way, if you find that the wizard has the proxy details already filled in, then it’s not magic – it just found them in your PC’s registry and probably has made life easier for you.

Let’s assume you’ve been able to make it work. (If not, please ask a knowledge person around you how you can use the web proxy, or try a manual configuration). It worked if you see something like this:

Your Freedom

It’s important that you see a “yes” or a number in any of the columns HTTP, HTTPS, FTP or UDP. A “yes” means that the client has been able to use this protocol to connect to the server using the default port settings, a number would mean that it has been able to connect but on a different port, and a “no” means that the protocol could not be used to connect to this server. The results are sorted by preference (a number between 0 and 10), it indicates how well the server fits your requirements (if you’ve set any). Choose a server (any will do for now, unless it’s all “no” – don’t use “auto-choose best”), then click on “Next”.

Your Freedom

On this page, enter your Your Freedom username and password; it’s the same you used to download the client from our web page. Click on “Next”.

Your Freedom

It seems you’re done now! Click on “Save and Exit”. The main window of the Your Freedom client should now look like this:

Your Freedom

Note that the client just doesn’t know anything about the server and your account’s profile before you’ve connected to the server, that’s why some of the values seem to be somewhat odd (including the bandwidth – it’s not unlimited unless you’ve bought a package). Click on “Start connection” and you should see something like this after a few seconds:

Your Freedom

Note that all the details are now filled in, and the bandwidth reads “64.0k”. That’s kilobits, about the speed of an ISDN connection or a bit faster than with a high-speed modem. Click on “Account Profile” now.

Your Freedom

This panel contains your account details. Without a package, you may not use any special servers (just the default ones), your bandwidth is limited, your maximum number of simultaneous streams is rather low and you may not relay connections from other PCs that use your PC as proxy. Your server connection will be terminated after 60 minutes (but you may reconnect when it happens). No server ports are assigned to you so none of them are forwarded to you. But at least, there are no access restrictions, you may access everything on the Internet.4

OK, time to configure your applications. Once you’ve set up at least a web browser to use Your Freedom the main objective should be reached: you should be able to access the web freely!

4 Configure applications – Automatically

Windows users can simply click on the “Applications” tab and see something like this:

Your Freedom

This is a list of applications whose configurations can be modified automatically by Your Freedom. The ones that are installed on your system have working checkboxes, the other ones are greyed out. Tick the ones you wish to use with Your Freedom, then click “OK”. You’ll see something like this:

Your Freedom

Hope it’s all successful! Then click “OK”. To restore the previous configuration of your applications, choose “Restore”, then tick the ones you would like to restore, and click “OK”. Note that applications that you’ve configured to use Your Freedom will only work properly if the Your Freedom connection to the server is up and running. Also, don’t forget to restore all your settings before de-installing the Your Freedom client!

To manually configure your applications, have a look at the Ports tab first:

Your Freedom

This tells you that your local PC is now acting as a SOCKS4/5 proxy on port 1080 and as a Web Proxy on port 8080. To change these values, untick the service, then modify the port, then re-activate (this can be done on-the-fly!). “Relay for others” will only work with some packages.

If for some reason you cannot configure your applications from within the Your Freedom client, you need to manually configure them to use web proxy “localhost” on port “8080” or SOCKS proxy “localhost” on port “1080” (if you’ve got the choice, use SOCKS version 5).

Where are I find more details?

Your-Freedom – Bypass Restrictive Firewalls and Filters

// February 8th, 2010 // 8 Comments » // Software // Written by

Is your Internet access somehow restricted? Are some web pages not accessible to you, or are you unable to run applications because of such restrictions? Then Your Freedom is for you. Although the techniques used by Your Freedom to break through such restrictions are fairly complicated, it is not difficult to use.

Your Freedom is a Connectivity Service that allows you to overcome connectivity restrictions imposed upon you by your network administrators, your provider or your country. It also provides a certain level of anonymization, and it hides from your administrators and other nosy people close to you what you are doing on the Internet.

clip_image002

How does it work?

It works by turning your local PC into a web proxy and a SOCKS proxy that can be used by your applications (web browser, games, whatever). Instead of connecting directly, applications can send connection requests to these “proxy servers” provided by the client part of the Your Freedom software running on your PC, and the client part will then forward these requests to the server part running on our connectivity servers through a connection protocol that is still available to you and through which the client part can reach the server part. It tunnels through firewalls, web proxies, FTP proxies and the like. Sounds complicated? Well it is, but the good news is you don’t have to worry about it, that’s their job.

Have a look at the picture below. The box on the left is your PC. Let’s say the restrictive firewall won’t let you access hotmail.com and you want to read your private email from your workplace; fire up the Your Freedom client and let it connect to one of our servers, configure your web browser to use it, and your web browser will be able to connect to hotmail.com by connecting to the Your Freedom client, who will forward the requests to one of our servers, who will then forward the request to the hotmail.com server. The replies from the hotmail.com server will take the same route backwards. clip_image002[6]

What does it cost?

A fundamental service is provided for free. It is restricted in bandwidth and the number of simultaneous streams, and there is a time limit for the connection between the client and the servers (but you may reconnect immediately).

Your Freedom provide upgrade packages that reduce or remove the bandwidth restriction and that allow for more simultaneous streams, and there are server ports that you can use to allow inbound connections to your PC or another PC in your network. The packages are available as one month, three months, six months or twelve months upgrades, and come in three different levels that we call BasicFreedom, EnhancedFreedom, and TotalFreedom.

What can I use it for?

Your Freedom can be used to overcome:

• Protocol restrictions If you cannot use certain applications or services because these applications cannot connect to the Internet in the usual way, Your Freedom may be able to help you. For example, if your favorite online game does not work in your place because someone decided that you shouldn’t play it, then try Your Freedom. Games known to work well include: WOW, EVE, Counterstrike and many others. You may not use P2P protocols because someone thinks it’s illegal1? Most P2P clients work nicely with Your Freedom, and you can even get a server port, which gives you a “high id”.

• Blacklists You may not visit certain web pages? Try Your Freedom. It turns your local PC into an unrestricted web proxy that provides access to all web pages that are generally accessible.

• Time restrictions Some users have said that they use Your Freedom to avoid time restrictions. In most cases, existing connections are not disrupted by such restrictions, and therefore all they need to do is to start the Your Freedom client before the restriction is in place, and keep it open. The connection between the client and the server part is persistent (this depends on the connection protocol, however).

It is really hard to believe that apple could fit so many great ideas into something so thin. A large, high-resolution LED-backlit IPS display. An incredibly responsive Multi-Touch screen. And an amazingly powerful Apple-designed chip. All in a design that’s thin and light enough to take anywhere. iPad isn’t just the best device of its kind. It’s a whole new kind of device.

Dell Inspiron 14z Review

// November 28th, 2009 // 5 Comments » // Gadgets // Written by

It has been a month we got New Dell Inspiron 14z laptop. Many people have been behind me for a review article on Dell Inspiron 14z. Before I start writing the about the Dell Inspiron 14z I would like to give a Flash Back!

inspiron-14z-design1

Around 2 months back, we decided to get a new laptop. Our usage was supposed to be multi-purpose – starting from development to business presentations. With a hell lot of laptop models available in the market, choosing the one right for us was really a difficult task. We noted down the things we were looking for in the laptop and started the screening process. I’m listing out the steps I think ideal for anyone choosing a laptop:

· Purpose

This is pretty simple question. Just think and answer yourself, why do you want to buy a Laptop? What do you want to do on the laptop? I think laptop market is mostly occupied by education and business field. Although everyone wants to use it for study/work purpose, entertainment stuff has also become elementary requirement. It may be movies, games or anything else.

As I have said, our purpose was multitasking. We required the laptop to perform well with all our web development tools. We wanted it for business presentations as well as for guest talks in educational institutes. We also required it to act as backup computer in case of emergency. We wanted it take along when we are going outstation to make efficient usage of time this post was in fact typed on bus in my journey from Sirsi to Belgaum!

· Configuration

After you are clear about your need for laptop, deciding configuration is not a big deal. The basic thing to focus here is on the Processor, since it cannot be upgraded easily. Then choose a suitable motherboard to your processor. RAM has become pretty cheaper these days and choose the memory accordingly. Estimating your storage requirement choose your hard disk size, If you are looking for Gaming or Graphic requirement then you have to opt-in for an graphic card.

For our usage we required at least a dual core processor, so we decided for Intel core-2-duo processor. We left the suitable Intel motherboard to the manufacturer. We estimated our memory requirement to be around 2GB RAM and 250 GB Hard Disk. Being in development field we required a good graphics card with at least 256MB memory to render quality graphics.

· Size and Weight

This may be an important factor for some like us, while not at all be under consideration for some other. There are different screen widths available may it be 14.1”, 15.6” and other. Screen resolutions are feature like WLED may be also taken into consideration. In the same way weights of laptops vary a lot from one model to another. If you are looking to carry around your laptop then you should be concerned about the size and weight of laptop.

For us we did not want a bigger screen or a too small one. The 14.1” screen size seemed to be ideal for us. With portability as one of the requirement the weight of laptop was also our concern.

· Budget

This is the critical factor while choosing a laptop for most one of us, otherwise everyone have gone for MacBook ! It’s like weighing your requirement on one hand while the money you are willing spend on the other hand. One may even require to compromise on the configuration of the laptop when it comes to fitting into the budget.

In our case we could afford maximum up to Rs. 45,000 for the laptop. We just want it to be as low as possible. With configuration as primary concern we were looking around for the best deal.

· Battery Life

This again may not be that important factor for many. Ultimately it depends on how comfortable you are plugging in your charger to power point all the time J

We us this factor was of concern due to some amount of business usage and the portability issues An 3-4 hour battery life was sufficient for us. Adding extra battery cells (say a 9 cell model instead of 6 cell) was what we weren’t looking, since it will increase the weight and make laptop bulky.

· Brand

This is one of the most neglected things in Indian scenario at least. This is of major concern when it comes to issues and quality support. The battery running 3 hours properly for 6 months may start getting exhausted in 1 hour after that. Some factors like heating to looks of the laptop may vary from brand to brand. One should be careful not to be taken way by price, varies offers and recommendations of dealers (Most of the time they recommend models with higher margins). Ultimately your laptops lifetime also depends on the brand.

After a deep analysis we choose “Dell”. The key factors were Wide Range of Models with Easy Customization, Quality Support and Budget.

· Accessories

It’s all about what are extra makeups or add-ons you want to your laptop. Here is a list of accessories is never ending to name a few: additional Keyboard/Mouse, Additional battery cells, Headphones, Pen drive, External Hard Disk etc

Our accessories requirement was pretty simple one. We needed a Back Pack Bag and an wireless mouse.

· Others

There are also some other factors which may be taken into consideration while choosing a laptop. One of such factor may be the operating system. While the market being dominated by Windows Operating Systems a laptop with Linux or No Operating system pre-installed can save you a few bucks. Although most of the models come with inbuilt webcam, microphone and DVD writer, yet you should cross verify once. Features like number of USB ports, HDMI Ports, Memory Card reader etc may vary from model to model.

We were looking for looking for a model with Ubuntu, DOS or without any operating system.

With weeks of analysis, all these process took us almost a month to find the best suited model. Our final choice was “Dell Inspiron 14z”. The technical specifications of our Dell Inspiron 14z are as follows:

We ordered the Laptop at Starnet Computers, Belgaum (http://www.starnetbelgaum.com) and waited one more month for this laptop to arrive. Ours was the first Inspiron 14z in Belgaum & whole of North Karnataka, while the 3rd Model to be shipped in Karnataka. But we believe it was worth watch !

After using the laptop for one month I’m surely in a position to tell about the in and out of Dell Inspiron 14z laptop.

Dell Inspiron 14z  Specifications:

  • Processor: Intel Core 2 Duo CULV SU7300 (1.3GHz, 800MHz, 3MB)
  • OS: Windows 7 Premium (64-bit)
  • Memory: 3GB Shared Dual Channel DDR3 at 1066MHz
  • Storage: 320GB 5400rpm HDD
  • Graphics: ATI Radion 512Mb
  • Display: 14.0” HD (1366×768) WLED Display and webcam
  • Optical Drive: 8x CD/DVD burner (DVD/-RW/R) with Dual-Layer
  • Wireless: Intel Wireless 5100n
  • Battery: 6-cell Lithium Ion battery (48.8 WHr)
  • Dimensions: 1.0″-1.5″ x 13.3″ x 9.4″ (H x W x D)
  • Weight: 4 lbs, 9.9 oz

Build and Design
In design and looks the Inspiron 14z is similar to the Inspiron 14. There are, nevertheless, some differences between the two models. The 14z is more power efficient than the Inspiron 14 due to its CULV processor and WLED display.
The notebook is made of relatively thin plastic, but build quality is good. The display lid, however, does suffer from minor flex: you can create ripples on the screen by pressing the back of the display. Other than that, there are no major problems with the build quality.
The bottom of the notebook provides easy access panels for the hard drive and RAM.

Screen and Speakers
The 14-inch display has 1366×768 pixels. Colors are good but contrast isn’t very impressive. The WLED backlighting is even and provides a wide range of brightness settings. Horizontal viewing angles are pretty good, but vertical viewing angles are average.
The stereo speakers are located beneath the front edge of the notebook palm rests so you will only hear a muffled sound when you put the laptop on your lap. Put the device on a desk and you should be able to hear better audio. Sound quality isn’t particularly good or bad. Audiophiles will definitely find a pair of headphones useful and the headphone jack produces clear, distortion free sound.

Keyboard and Touchpad
The keyboard has full-sized keys. It is very firm and shows absolutely no flex at all. The only problem with the keyboard is probably the lack of backlighting.
The touchpad is a Synaptics model using Dell’s proprietary touchpad drivers. It supports multi-touch controls. Sensitivity is good with very little lag.

Ports and Features
Port selection is average for a notebook of this size. There are 3 USB ports, HDMI video out port, VGA, a multi-format memory card reader, Ethernet and a standard 8xCD/DVD burner with dual-layer support. The Inspiron 14z doesn’t have an ExpressCard slot, eSATA or FireWire.

Performance
The Inspiron 14z runs on an Intel Core 2 Duo CULV SU7300 processor with ATI Radeon 512Mb graphics. Performance is good for daily activities such as surfing the web and processing Office documents. You can also make simple edits to your photos or videos.
The CULV processor is highly power efficient but it does affect the overall performance of the notebook. That said, the machine is still good enough to serve your basic needs as a family notebook. But if you want to play the latest 3D games or run high-end photo editing applications, this is not the laptop to buy. The price tag, too, seem a bit odd.

Battery
The Inspiron 14z has a 6-cell 48.8 WHr battery. At around 8 hours, battery life is impressive for a notebook of this size, but still it falls short of Dell’s promise of 66% better battery life.

Heat and Noise
The cooling system does a good job and keeps the heat and noise levels well within normal limits.

Pros:

· Awesome Looks

· Light Weight & Thinner

· Comfortable Keypad

· HDMI Port

· Long Battery Life

· Windows 7, 64 Bit

· WLED Screen

· Less Heat

Cons:

· Average Performance

· No Keyboard Backlight

· Slightly over priced

Considering all these pros and cons, I’m still satisfied with my choice of Dell Inspiron 14z. I don’t say it is the best model available in market, but surely I could say it is a model you can consider for comparison if you are looking for a longer battery life. I hope this article would have provided a user review of Dell Inspiron 14z laptop as well as few tips on choosing a laptop. I would love to receive your comments/queries.
